December Activities

Eleanor loves pulling kleenex out of the box so I gave her a full box and it entertained her for 2 minutes. The past several months I've been working for an internet rater company and I've been required to work 10 hours per week. I started looking for a job during the summer time when we knew Aaron would be done with the military in August. This work from home job seemed like a great set up. I didn't pass the required test the first time and then tried again and passed. 10 hours doesn't seem like a lot, but it's been tricky trying to find 10 hours to sit in front of my computer for that long during the week. With the money, I was able to purchase all of our Christmas gifts and pay for Aaron to get a suit. This job was an answer to our prayers during this time. We've also been so blessed as Aaron was able to work for the reserves that provided us additional income we weren't expecting. Aaron also has been translating and I've been working for a friend who runs an Air B&B. I decided to quit this job in preparation to Aaron leaving in a few weeks. When he's gone, I'll have more responsibilities on my shoulders as a single mom so I've decided it's best to not add more stress to my life, even for a few extra dollars. But I'm grateful Heavenly Father has provided so many opportunities for us to work!! And I'm even more grateful than before that Aaron makes it possible for me to focus on being a stay-at-home mom FULL-TIME!! :)

Austin helped me dip some pretzels, my favorite Christmas treat. Eli was at school and we missed him! We saved him a sprinkled covered pretzel for an after school treat.

And I finished listening to this book this week. Oh I loved it and definitely felt the true meaning of Christmas. I think I'll make it a Christmas tradition to read it every year.

The kids played nicely as Aaron and I worked at my friend's Air B&B for a few hours. Actually, Aaron did most of the work and I answered any questions he had since I've been looking over the house for the past 6 months.

Thursday night was stake temple night! I completely forgot the temple would be decorated with the nativity! We were able to do sealings for our family names. It's an amazing feeling taking family names to the temple. Eleanor had a slight fever the day before our planned temple date and I was so grateful she was feeling better so we could leave the kids with a babysitter. I love dating Aaron!

And Friday evening Alex and her kids came down after school to meet us at Bass Pro to see Santa! It was magical! I need to post a picture of our kids sitting on Santa's lap! Alex treated us to dinner at Costa Vida for my birthday. Thanks, Alex! It was the best birthday celebrate with family.

Saturday morning was our ward Christmas breakfast. It was simple and lovely. The kids wore their PJs and loved seeing another Santa. Our neighbor and her three kids joined us. They've come to the primary program, the Halloween trunk or treat and now the Christmas breakfast. I didn't even have to text her the address this time. :) It's funny, because each time I've invited her, she's said YES! Hopefully this will blossom into something more. Maybe it won't. But she's definitely boasted my confidence to just invite others before assuming they won't want to participate.

Saturday morning the boys and I made sugar cookies. They're a lot of work and always a mess, but it's worth it. I make these cookies twice a year - Christmas and Valentine's Day.

And in big Eli news - he has glasses!! He looks so intelligent, which he is! The glasses are to help his reading and writing, which I can tell an improved difference already.

On December 5, we celebrated 4 years in Colorado!! How is the even possible?? Oh it's been a happy time. Aaron calculated that he's been gone for 13 months of those 4 years. Crazy, right? Although our family has been stretched and there have been challenging times, we've also added Austin and Eleanor to our family and have made millions of happy memories together and love living close to extended family. We sure love you Colorado!

Volk Family Pictures 2018

Family pictures seem to always take a lot of work to coordinate and actually make happen, but they're sooo worth it. It has been three years since all the Volks were together. Thanks, Mary Beth for these pictures!!

Austin's shoe was wet. The boys were tossing rocks and sticks into a little creek and Austin kicked his shoe and it plopped right in. Aaron saved the day and rescued said shoe, but then it was our turn for pictures and the shoe was soaked so Austin wasn't really pleased. haha! But I love having these facial expressions on camera.

I love him. I love him. I love him.

Finishing up Nov./ Welcome Dec.

On Monday for our FHE activity, we set up our Christmas decorations!! I love Christmas in the air.

We've been taking morning walks almost daily.

Tiny's first Christmas! She's excited. :)

Eleanor grabbed my phone and it was on selfie mode. I snapped a few pics and she was so happy smiling at herself!

Austin had a turn too! haha.

And she's soooo proud of herself for learning to climb the stairs. Here she is bundled up, ready for our morning walk.

Sometimes the boys bike or run or complain.

She also loooooves pulling anything and everything out of the shelves throughout the house.

Cutest little Bateman.

We picked Eli up from school on Thursday evening and headed to Utah. We made a quick stop in Fruita to get gas and frosties and give Grandma Donna and Papa Joe hugs! Surprisingly, the kids did great on the trip. I fully anticipated meltdowns but they were excited. We arrived in Utah at 2 a.m.

Friday morning, Angela and I went to the temple together! It was lovely. I love attending the temple with family by my side.

The cousins loved playing together. I love that they're all friends.

Friday afternoon we met up with Duane and LeeAnn at Scheel's. It was like an amusement park inside. We've been once before, but found activities we never knew existed. It was so great and cheap!

Play place with Grandpa.

$1 ferris wheel rides. The boys got to go twice so they could have turns riding with Grandpa Volk and Dad.

$1 gun shooting.

$1 bowling. It was memorable with the grandparents!!

Next we ran to Salt Lake where Aaron was fitted for a suit from his friend's suit shop. Aaron served his mission with this friend who now has a fancy suit shot where suits are made in Thailand and he gave Aaron a great deal. While Aaron was getting fitting, I drove the sleeping children around Temple Square. The boys woke up and I was able to show them where I worked as a young intern at Church headquarters once upon a time. I love Temple Square!

Back again for family time!!

We spent the night with Angela and Mike and we loved being able to see them too when we were only in Utah for 2 quick days. I forgot to get a picture of Angela and me celebrating our birthday with peppermint shakes from Chickfila.

On Saturday, we gathered for family pictures before going to Josie's baptism! Oh it was a special day! The boys have been talking about Josie's baptism for weeks. It's so special for our kids to be able to see cousins they look up to so much get baptized. The great grandparents were even there and it was a treat to hug them too!

During the baptism, I felt so much gratitude for the great decisions of those around us, like Josie getting baptized! We loved being there and sharing in this special day.

Due to snow in the Utah forecast, we decided to head to Fruita after the baptism and reception. Like I keep saying, it was a quick trip, but so worth it. We attended a 9 a.m. ward at the Fruita building and my mom came along too. Steele was in a bishopric meeting and popped out for quick second to say hi. During the sacrament meeting, my mom said that particular ward struggles. She's in a stake calling and is getting to know the ward in the area better. It was during that sacrament meeting, I was reminded that our little family will do our best to thrive wherever we end up moving in the next year. I'd love to be in a smaller ward/branch and give our children the opportunity to serve their best.

This explains how we all felt after church. We were exhausted and once again wanted to avoid the snow in the forecast. We got on the road and a few hours later, there was several inches of snow in Fruita!! On the drive home, Eli threw up twice. Poor kid. He was so sweet and said, "Thanks, mom" as I was cleaning off his throw up. He started feeling better and seems to be doing a lot better now. We decided to stop and have dinner with Alex and company and had the best time!

In other news, my MTC teacher passed away last week. The funeral was on Saturday and I really wanted to be there, but I just couldn't figure out the best way to make it work. I love Utah, but everything is distantly so far a part  Anyway, my mission companion, Ginger, was able to attend the funeral and she told me all about it. How grateful I am for Jarem's amazing example of being faithful until the end. He battled cancer for 3 years and didn't die bitter, only faith filled. I tear up every time I think about his wife and five young children without their husband and father. Oh how I pray Heavenly Father will comfort them and they'll continue to see so many miracles in their life.

We're grateful we were safe traveling in winter time. We love our family time and cherish the memories we get to look back on through pictures.
